I'm enthusiastic and genuinely try to make the places I work at better than when I started.
I love this question, because that's all I'm asking for… someone to take a punt on me.
I'm bloody passionate, in everything I do. But especially about the Dolphins. I've got stories, deeply rooted in family history, about why they mean so much.
I'm enthusiastic and genuinely try to make the places I work at better than when I started. I love making people laugh. I'm positive and my default view is always optimistic.
What steps has Jack taken to break into the sports industry?
I've applied for a number roles (I think about 6-8) in sports the last 18 months, including some at the Queensland Rugby League.
I've connected with a few people at the Dolphins (which was for two of the roles I applied for) on LinkedIn.
I've been trying to leverage existing contacts and connections to help with some of my applications.

Jack's interest in sport all started from its ability to bring joy into people's lives.
Sport is just in my bones; has been forever. Specifically Rugby League, but a sport lover across the board. Lived 10yrs+ experience in a high-performance sport environment. Love the emotions and joy that sport can bring into people's lives. Always been inspired by athletes. Love the real stories that come out of sport (not the click-bait media stories).
Since then, Jack has gone on to work in B2B Marketing, achieving things like
Achievement 1 | Achievement 2 | Achievement 3 |
|---|---|---|
Supported delivery of a $250K marketing content project for one of Australia's largest telcos, including 150+ pieces of website content | Reached 350,000+ people through a client's digital out-of-home billboard campaign | Grew a client's LinkedIn following by 95% and Instagram by 166% over 15 months |
Where does Jack want to go?

I'm looking to pivot out of my current industry (marketing agency) and role (marketing delivery) to transition into the get into the sports industry. I've identified the types of roles I'm most aligned to (outside of marketing): 1) Partnerships/Sponsorships 2) Project Manager 3) Commercial 4) Fan Experience 5) Operations Working in Rugby League (at the Dolphins specifically) would be a huge win in <12 months! | Ideally, Rugby League for the Dolphins NRL. The idea of working for Brisbane 2032 and building a real career over the next 6 years on the runway to delivering the Olympics, in my hometown, is something that also resonates deeply with me. The Queensland Academy of Sport, as the peak body of sport in QLD, is also something that sounds incredible. |
What sporting problem keeps Jack up at night, and how would you solve it?
The criticism of referees and players that goes beyond genuine commentary or match analysis. The awful DMs, the death threats, the disgusting crowd comments. Not only at an elite level, but also in community and junior sport too.
What is Jack like?
What kind of environment do you thrive in?
Collaborative and hands-on. Doing the important stuff. Not getting bogged down in things that don't move the needle. I think I'm a bit of a chameleon in the sense that I'm comfortable speaking with directors and senior managers, but equally the athletes and fans.
When have you had to show resilience in your life or career?
Every damn weekend as a referee in the QLD Rugby League referee's High Performance Unit. Performances weren't judged on what you did well, but were judged by how many mistakes you made.
The sacrifices and resilience that come with having to "earn your spot", week in, week out, are high-level character building, that's for sure.
Having my debut, a dream I'd been working toward for years, impacted by COVID-19, and to come out the other side is something I'm so proud of.
What about Jack’s interests outside of work?
What are your interests outside of work?
Reading! I love reading non-fiction for learning (not necessarily personal development, but for perspective) and fiction for a bit of escapism.
Staying active (running, surfing, hiking, water and snow skiing, long walks with my dog, anything beach related)
Always up for a coffee!
What is your favourite sporting moment?
It's genuinely a tie between:
- 2004 Billy Slater's iconic chip and chase try for QLD in State of Origin, game 2.
- 2005 Matt Bowen's intercept try for QLD in State of Origin, game 1.
- The NRL Dolphins win in their inaugural NRL game
What’s your ideal holiday?
A good mix of action and adventure, balanced with some rest.
Done a couple of ski holidays in NZ and Japan, but European slopes are high on the bucket list!
If you had 30 minutes to pick the brain of anyone, who would it be and why?
In a sporting context? The CEO of the Dolphins NRL, Terry Reader. I'm fascinated to know what it has been like building a club from the ground up in such a competitive environment.
Anyone in the world? Barack Obama. The man is genuinely one of the best humans going. His ethics, integrity, and spirit is something I admire deeply.
What’s one book or podcast that’s helped your career you recommend?
The Trusted Advisor by David Maister, Charles Green and Robert Galford helped me understand who and how to trust (and to help people trust me as a consultant).
Additional details
Where in the world are you located, and where are you open to work?
Located in Sunshine Coast, QLD. Actively wanting to relocate to Brisbane for work. At this stage of my life, I'm currently not open to work outside of Brisbane.
What is the most important consideration for you in your next role?
A role that sounds exciting and has opportunities to do lots of different things within it.
Professional development and progression within the organisation would be nice in an organisation I could see myself at for a long time, but not a dealbreaker in the short-term.
A good manager is always desirable.
What others say about Jack
Emotionally intelligent, self-aware, enthusiastic, can-do attitude.
