I bring a genuine willingness to learn, make mistakes, and keep improving all with a smile.

- On why organisations should take a punt on him

I am value-driven, hardworking, and honest. I bring a genuine willingness to learn, make mistakes, and keep improving all with a smile. What I think separates me is the combination of my background and my attitude. I come from outside the traditional sport pathway, having spent years working in mental health and community programs, and that has given me a perspective on people, wellbeing, and community impact that most marketing candidates simply do not have. My own lived experience has deepened my empathy and shaped how I show up for the people I work with. I also believe in doing whatever the team needs, whether that is leading a 300-person conference or vacuuming the office in the evening. I have a lot of integrity, and I show up fully regardless of the task.

What steps has Shyam taken to break into the sports industry?

  • I have applied for many jobs and taken lots of meetings with people within the industry.

  • Studied as well, and I have done volunteer work.

Shyam’s interest in sport all started from its ability to bring people together

Sport has been central to my life for as long as I can remember, and over time that love has grown into something more specific. I am drawn to the people in sport, the athletes, the staff, the communities, and the role I can play in helping them thrive. Whether that is supporting athletes to perform at their best, building programs that bring communities together, or using content and communications to showcase the people and stories that make sport worth following, I find genuine satisfaction in work that makes people feel good about themselves and the organisations they are part of. Sport is one of the few environments where all of that comes together naturally.

Since then, Shyam has gone on to work in sport and mental health institutions, achieving things like

Where does Shyam want to go?

Next 6 - 12 months

Next 5 - 10 years

I want to be in the job I genuinely love to do. I am looking to secure a marketing role within sport or an adjacent industry, such as events or media, where I can apply my skills across content creation, social media, communications, and campaign delivery. I am also passionate about player welfare and am keen to explore how that intersects with my marketing background, particularly around storytelling and community impact. Alongside that, I am looking to build meaningful mentorship relationships that help me grow as a professional and deepen my understanding of the industry.

Over the next 5 to 10 years I am working toward a senior leadership role within a sport organisation, ideally heading up a marketing or communications function within a club or governing body. I want to lead teams that deliver meaningful fan and community experiences, with a genuine focus on player welfare and wellbeing woven into that work. Longer term, I am open to founding my own business in the sport and wellbeing space, drawing on my experience across marketing, events, and community programs

What others say about Shyam

  • “I have had the pleasure of working with Shyam on and off over the past 4 years. In all my time working with Shyam, his professionalism, willingness to go the extra mile and hard work have been exemplary. Shyam worked within the Membership team and displayed outstanding teamwork, and approached his customer service role with a friendly and positive attitude. Shyam’s true strength is his interpersonal and communication skills, which have allowed him to develop strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders. On match days, Shyam required very little supervision to undertake his duties and at times was called on to deal with challenging situations, which he managed with composure, compassion, and ensured the customer’s voice was always heard.” - Grant White, General Manager – Membership & Museum, WACA & Perth Scorchers

  • “Initially, Shyam assisted with match-day preparations and worked in the team store. From mid-September, Shyam undertook an audit of our Membership program and assisted in the implementation of our 2017 membership program. His work with regard to auditing our 2016 membership and recommendations and research for 2017 has been invaluable. The survey conducted by Shyam, as well as his cost-benefit analysis was presented to the Board at a meeting. Shyam’s work during his time at East Perth was to a high standard. The nature of our work is often to discuss and brainstorm ideas, then present them to the CEO for consideration. The fact that Shyam’s membership audit was presented to the Board speaks volumes about the analysis and preparation he conducted. I found Shyam to have a very competent knowledge base and skill level to perform the tasks that were asked of him in his time at East Perth. He has a good understanding of what is required within a sporting organisation. His ability to get along with co-workers as well as his willingness to listen and learn stand him in good stead”. - James Sansalone, Workplace Supervisor

  • “I am writing this reference letter for Shyam Menasse, who worked for the East Perth Football Club under my management for a six-month contract from April 2017 to September 2017 as our Marketing Assistant after completing a 100-hour internship between July and September 2016. Shyam reached out to the club asking if he could complete his 100-hour internship with our club. After an interview, I decided Shyam would be a great fit for our organisation at the time. It was clear to see he had studied numerous courses in Sports Development, Business and Sports Management and was keen to put his knowledge into practice nearing the end of his degree. Shyam proved himself to be a competent employee. When there was an opportunity for us to employ a Marketing Assistant, Shyam was a standout candidate. His professional acumen, particularly in sporting organisations, has developed over many years of studying, working, volunteering and participating. He is able to adapt and problem solve, a key characteristic for working in the sporting field, is exemplary. Shyam proved to be a well-liked member of our staff due to his friendly nature and work ethic. I highly recommend Shyam for any position like this. I have no doubt he would be an asset to the organisation and will continue to grow and develop as he furthers his career.” - James Sansalone, Commercial and Marketing Manager, East Perth Football Club
