I am determined to get my hands dirty with tasks no one wants to do.

- On why organisations should take a punt on him

I have in the past and still currently put my hands up for the tasks around work or around volunteering no one wants to do. E.G. I would always be one of the first to arrive at my local little athletics club to set up all equipment and events, and be one of the last ones to leave. I wanted to give back, as after competing for over 10 years the club deserved to be respected for their hard work, therefore I put the handwork in to appreciate them for all that they did for myself through my athlete career.

What steps has Andrew taken to break into the sport industry?

  • Worked casually in the program delivery and participation space across Cricket NSW and AFL NSW/ACT.

  • As well as experience in Venue Management for 10 months, increasing knowledge and skills to be transferred into different roles, leagues and teams.

Andrew’s interest in sport started when growing up.

I have always had a passion for sports, and it all started with two stories. When I was about 8 years of age, I started Auskick at my local primary school, being from New South Wales, the AFL space in 2010 was not too strong. At the same period of the time the GWS Giants have been announced as the 18th AFL club. A few players came to my school to promote the game through Auskick, one of the those players was 16 year old Jeremy Cameron, and now I have working with the AFL as a Game Development Officer promoting these clinics to player visits to the next crop of AFL lovers.

The other story is more of a personal story. I was given a 5% chance to live past my 5th Birthday due to many health concerns from birth. Through this physical activity became common practice, this included a lot of running, I mean a lot... This was a part of my life from such a young age and still is now. From being told the above from doctors to last year running my first half marathon, and training/planning for taking the next step and running a full marathon. Through this I have loved sport and I can say that sport saved my life and want to follow this through to show overs that they can do whatever they put their mind to it.

What sporting problem keeps Andrew up at night, and how would they solve it?

What is Andrew like?

  1. What kind of environment do you thrive in?

  • Fast paced, outdoor environment, doing something different on a day to day basis.

  1. When have you had to show resilience in your life or career?

  • I had to demonstrate resilience when I was leaving a role in retail, which effected my health both physically and mentally. And left the role with nothing lined up. But had to show resilience in waiting for the next role to come up, this patience was effective as I was offered two casual roles in the week after my last week. Then juggled the two roles well and loved having a new job and a new lease on life.

And does he use what he learnt from that day in his role at GWS Giants as motivation to keep going.
