What steps has Kelly taken to break into the sports industry?

  • Volunteered as Media Manager at Coburg Football Club and Signed up to Sports Grad to hold myself accountable to achieve my goal.

Kelly’s interest in sport all started from playing cricket as the only girl at her club…

Sport has always been a major part of my life—not just as entertainment, but as a way to learn teamwork, discipline, and resilience. Growing up in an active family, I played competitive junior and senior cricket alongside my brother and dad. As the only girl at my club, I quickly learned to back myself, work hard to earn respect, and push through challenges. Some of my fondest memories are spending entire days at the Boxing Day Test or AFL games, completely captivated—not just by the cricket or football, but by the atmosphere, the crowd, and the energy that brought everyone together. In recent years, I’ve completed four marathons and two Hyrox events as a solo athlete, deepening my appreciation for the effort and coordination behind major sporting events. I’m fascinated by how these experiences are created—the logistics, the operations, and the sense of community they inspire. These experiences have sparked a passion for working in sport event operations, engagement, ticketing, or partnerships. I want to help deliver the kind of moments that shaped my own love for sport and inspire others to feel that same connection and joy.

What sporting problem keeps Kelly up at night, and how would you solve it?

One problem in sport I’d love to solve is ensuring that true fans get fair access to tickets. Too often, tickets are snapped up by corporate buyers or resellers before genuine supporters get a chance. From an operations perspective, I’d love to develop fairer ticketing systems — using verified fan programs — to make sure that the atmosphere in stadiums is driven by real fans.

What is Kelly like?

  1. What kind of environment do you thrive in?

  • An environment that is challenging, supportive, and collaborative with a strong team focus is where I thrive best.

  1. When have you had to show resilience in your life or career?

  • I grew up playing cricket and continued until I was 18 years old. From a young age, I was passionate about the game, but at the time, there were very few opportunities for girls or women to play. Because of that, I played with and against boys and men in both junior and senior cricket. Throughout those years, I often experienced exclusion and felt like an outsider. However, those challenges taught me resilience and shaped my character. Cricket gave me the strength to stay true to myself, and I refused to let anyone’s comments or judgments stop me from doing what I loved.

What about Kelly’s interests outside of work?

  1. What are your interests outside of work?

  • Outside of work, I have a few passions that keep me busy. I love watching sport, especially cricket, AFL, and baseball. I’m also dedicated to my fitness, from body building competitions, running marathons, and competing in Hyrox events to regular gym training. Traveling is another passion of mine; I enjoy exploring new places and experiencing different cultures. I also love cooking and baking, which allows me to be creative and unwind after a busy week

  1. What is your favourite sporting moment?

  • Not exactly a single moment, but my favourite sporting memory is Mitchell Johnson’s dominant 2013–14 Ashes series. He took 37 wickets, including a fierce yorker that struck Stuart Broad’s foot, and his intimidating pace left England genuinely scared to face him. Australia went on to a 5–0 series whitewash, and several English players even admitted to being ‘scared’ of him. I always loved watching Mitchell Johnson play growing up.

  1. What’s your ideal holiday?

  • My ideal holiday is a mix of activity and relaxation. I love destinations where I can go for runs or walks to explore new areas, but also have downtime to unwind and read a good book. Beaches are always a favourite for me, and I enjoy walking trails, visiting gyms, and trying out good local food wherever I go.I love balancing exploration, fitness, and relaxation on a holiday.

  1. If you had 30 minutes to pick the brain of anyone, who would it be and why?

  • If I had 30 minutes to pick anyone’s brain, it would be Hyrox athlete Lucy Davis. Her dedication to fitness and professional achievements has inspired me to believe I can push myself further than I ever thought possible, both in fitness and in my career. I’d want to learn the mindset, habits, and strategies that keep her disciplined and motivated, and how she overcomes challenges in training and her professional life. Speaking with her would be an invaluable opportunity to gain insight and inspiration that I could apply to my own fitness journey and career in sport.

  1. What’s book or podcast that’s helped your career you recommend?

  • Becoming Magnetic by Erika Cramer has helped me believe in myself more and overcome the imposter syndrome I previously felt about working in the sporting industry. It encouraged me to recognize my own skills and value, and gave me practical strategies to approach opportunities with confidence. The book has been instrumental in shifting my mindset, helping me feel capable and empowered to pursue a career in sport.
